In the Mexico marathon, 11,000 out of 30,000 runners is disqualified due to cheating
About 30,000 runners participated in the Mexico City Marathon. Reuters, citing the Spanish newspaper Marker, reported that tournament authorities disqualified about 11,000 of them for cheating.
The Mexico City Marathon was held on August 27. After that race, the organizers received complaints that many runners used cars, bikes and public transport to evade. After that, the tournament authorities started investigating the matter. They took action against 11 thousand runners after getting the truth of the complaint.
The 42.195 km course had checkpoints every 5 km. Runners who are not seen at any of the checkpoints are disqualified.
In a statement to the Spanish newspaper Marca, the organizers of the marathon said that the Mexico City Sports Institute informs that any competitors who engaged in unsportsmanlike behavior in the XL Mexico City Marathon Telcel 2023 will be found and their registrations cancelled.
The Mexico City Marathon is the 'Gold' status of World Athletics. However, there have been cases of cheating in this competition before. In 2017, 6,000 runners were stripped of their medals commemorating finishing the race. In 2018 the number was 3090. They all resorted to deception.
